“Are we there yet?” These are the dreaded words that anyone who is driving with small children or even older adults dread hearing. Nowadays, you don t typically see too many people driving around or prepping their vehicles for road trips. Not only are road trips costly with such expenses as food, fuel, lodging and the unexpected emergencies that crop up, but road trips also put a lot of wear and tear on whatever vehicle is being used.
My vehicle is only two years old and has well over forty five thousand miles on it all because of the fact that I do a lot of long distance driving to visit family who live out of state or across the state. And while I typically enjoy the occasional long drive, lately I’ve been considering the fact that I may need to significantly scale back the amount of driving that I do because it is simply beginning to cost too much money. Just the other day, I had to bring my vehicle in to be serviced because the battery had corroded and on top of that, the air conditioning quit on me. Ironically enough, when did I choose to have my air conditioning fixed but on a day when it was supposed to be 97 degrees outside!
If you re trying to think of ways to help your trip go smoothly, there are a number of things that you can do. For instance, for starters, make sure that you bring plenty of food and water with you if you know that you are planning a long trip. There is nothing worse than getting stuck somewhere and being thirsty as well as starving. Additionally, always make sure that you throw together an emergency road kit that should include a blanket, sweater and sweatpants, flashlight, jumper cables (if you have them) and of course, an emergency first aid kit.
If you know that you re going to be bringing kids with you (or even elderly adults), make sure that the kids have something that will keep them occupied for the majority of the duration of the trip. This can include things such as a book, coloring book, games, music, dvds or video games. Also, when you plan out the trip ahead of time (as it should always be), you may want to find out where the restrooms are along the way so that you can be prepared to stop. Especially if you travel with children and/or the elderly, you may need to stop more or less frequently as needed.

Most people are happiest if they know how long it will take to get where they are going. Knowing your trip and having it planned out ahead of time can be a godsend to someone who is bursting with never ending curiosity as to how long it should take to get from Point A to Point B . Stopping to use the bathroom also breaks up the trip and helps things to go much more smoothly because it allows you and your passengers an opportunity to get out and stretch your legs. Even if you don t feel like stopping, you should still do so anyway your body will thank you!

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise vacation? It s a big question for many cruise travelers and there s been plenty of confusion regarding the U.S. State Department s new guidelines. Here s what you need to know when you cruise and how the new passport rules launching June 1, 2009 could affect you.

Documentation requirements

Currently, U.S. citizens need a passport for cruises that stop at ports in South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. However, U.S. citizens cruising roundtrip from a U.S. port to Bermuda, the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico do not need a passport under the U.S. State Department s Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). These itineraries are called closed loop voyages. A closed loop voyage or itinerary occurs when a vessel departs from a U.S. port or place and returns to the same U.S. port upon completion of the voyage. Per the WHTI Land and Sea Final Rule, travelers on closed loop voyages are not subject to the same documentary requirements for entry to the United States as other travelers.
If your voyage falls under the closed loop rule you only need to carry a government issued photo ID (such as a driver s license) and a certified birth certificate (children traveling with an adult are also required to carry a birth certificate). A certified birth certificate has a registrar s raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar s signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar s office, which must be within one year of your birth.
Keep in mind this rule is for U.S. citizens cruising from a U.S. port. If you are taking one way itineraries you will have to have a passport. For example, if you start a cruise in Vancouver and end in Seward or Whittier, Alaska you must have a passport. The same is true for cruises starting in Los Angeles and ending in Acapulco, cruises starting in Miami and ending in Barbados, or cruises starting in Quebec and ending in New York City.
One very important item to understand regarding the WHTI rule is that U.S. citizens who travel by air to the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda to catch their cruise ship must have a passport. Currently, those who drive across the Canadian border to a port will not need a passport since land crossings are currently exempt. In that instance the aforementioned proof of citizenship is needed.
As always, passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Requirements on June 1, 2009:

On June 1, 2009 all arriving and returning U.S. citizens must have a passport or passport card to enter the U.S. by land from Canada and Mexico. One exception is U.S. and Canadian citizens under the age of 16 will be able to present a birth certificate instead of a passport for crossing land/sea borders between the U.S. and Canada. There also will be special provisions for children traveling in school, sports or other groups. So, if you drive to Canada to catch a cruise you?ll need a passport. Additionally, the new rule means that round trip Alaska cruises from Vancouver will require a passport.

Passport or Passport Card?

What s the difference between a passport and a passport card? The card contains radio frequency identification on an RFID chip, designed to be read quickly by scanning equipment installed at U.S. points of entry. However, it is not acceptable for air travel.
There is some cost savings in having a passport card versus a passport, here s what you need to know:
Standard, first time passports now cost $100 and are valid 10 years. U.S. citizens age 15 and younger pay $85 for a passport valid for five years.

The new land/sea passport card costs $45 for adults and would be valid 10 years. Citizens age 15 and younger pay $35 for a card valid for five years.

Current passport holders can apply for the card as a renewal and pay $20. The card costs $10 for those younger than age 16 who already has a passport.

For travelers who don t want to deal with passports or passport cards, there is the trusted traveler card issued by the federal government to prescreened travelers (But those won t get you over an international border the way a passport will.) Also, a number of border states are working on enhanced drivers licenses containing the RFID chip and other security features that are acceptable for entry at land and sea points.

Traveling without a passport is risky

Traveling to foreign countries without a passport carries some risk. For example, if someone who sails out of Miami without a passport falls ill when the ship is at sea and needs to fly home from the Bahamas it will be a hassle to get home since air travel from foreign countries requires a passport.
Additionally, if you miss embarkation and have to fly to meet the ship at the next foreign port you would need a passport. These situations are rare, of course, but it does happen from time to time.
Lastly, keep in mind that all cruise line passenger contracts state it is the passenger s responsibility to have proper documentation when arriving for embarkation at the pier. If you don t have proper documentation you won t be allowed to board the ship for your cruise.

Flight Confirmation: It is important to call and reconfirm your booking about 24 72 hours in advance of the scheduled flight. Check with news sources such as local television to make sure there have not been any issues that will cause a flight disruption or cancellation. You can also check the airline online to see if there have been any changes with your flight.
Identification and Passports: Passengers over the age of 16 must show government issued photo identification for domestic air travel such as a driver’s license or health card. For those under the age of 16, non government issued identification such as a student ID card or birth certificate is recommended. When traveling internationally, every passenger, including their children, must provide a valid passport.
Visas: It is essential that you check the visa requirements for the countries you are visiting. The Consular Affairs website has a list of countries that you need a visa to travel to. Check the International Travel Reports to make sure there are no security, safety, and health issues with the county you are going to visit.
Insurance: When traveling to another country or even state or province, it is important that you are protected. Check with your Credit Card Company, home insurance policy, and auto club insurance to see if you have adequate coverage for medical emergencies, lost or stolen luggage…etc. Consider purchasing travel insurance. Make sure you know exactly what your coverage entails.
Immunizations: It is important to make sure you have the appropriate vaccinations for the health risks associated with the country you are traveling. In some countries, immunization is a requirement for entering that country. Anti malarial medications may have to be started weeks in advance of the flight.
Prepare for Airport Security: Make sure you know what you can take on the flight and what is prohibited. Passengers are allowed to bring liquids, gels and aerosols through security screening as long as the items are packaged in containers with a capacity of 100ml / 100 grams or less, and that the containers fit in one sealable clear plastic bag.
Before you embark on your next flight, it is important to make the necessary preparations so that your trip will be relaxing and enjoyable.

In a lot of ways, parents today are extremely lucky when they get behind the wheel of a car with children in tow. This is due, in large part, to the fact that there are so many gadgets and distractions available to keep your child/children busy as you drive. Not only do you now have the peace of mind to concentrate on the road before you, but you don t have to be distracted by your children as much.

When possible, always try to travel with another adult. This is a great idea because it will free you up to fully focus on the road while the secondary adult keeps an eye on the children. Additionally, having another adult in the vehicle will help out if a child needs something or even if there is an emergency. I cannot tell you how many times I have been driving and seen a parent fully turned around in their vehicle to tend to their child s needs…while they are driving! As a responsible adult and/or a responsible parent, it is up to us to make sure that our children s lives are safe while we are traveling.

Prior to getting into a vehicle with children, make sure that the children are safely secured in their car seats and/or seatbelts. If they are old enough, ask them if they need or want anything. Explain to them beforehand where you are going and how long you expect to be in the car. They may not remember this, but it is still a good idea to let them know anyway. Prior to even stepping foot in the vehicle, explain to slightly older children the safety rules of traveling in a car. You don t want to scare a child, but let him or her know that there are certain dangerous things that can happen if they touch certain things or do certain things while an adult is driving. Let them know the proper way to address you if they have any needs while on the trip.
If your child doesn’t feel well or if there is a problem while you are driving, don t panic. Simply pull your car off to the side of the road or exit the roadway in a calm manner. Remember that when you panic (especially if there are other children in the car), you only cause them to panic more, which creates distraction something you do not want while driving. Traveling with children doesn’t  have to be a pain. In fact, it can be very enjoyable. Talk to your child while driving; communication is always a good idea. However, avoid using your cell phone or playing with the radio too much, etc. Having a child in the car is distraction enough, and you don t want to add any more distractions into the mix. If there is another adult in the car, simply ask them every now and then to check on the kids to make sure that they are ok. You don t want to ignore your children, but you don t want them to be your sole focus while you are driving. Remember, your safe driving should be the main focus here!

Romania is a country with a rich medieval heritage, as well as a land of awe-inspiring architecture. Each year, many tourists book a trip to Romania to see the ancient houses along the streets of Sibiu, the picturesque monasteries in Bucovina and of course, the magnificent Romanian castles towering over Transylvania and its neighboring cities.

Indeed, the Romanian castles are attractions worth seeing for anyone planning a trip to Romania. Dating back to as far as the 13th century, these imposing structures used to be the homes of Saxon nobility - a fact attested to by their luxurious interiors and austere defenses. Because of this, some of them have also been considered as World Heritage Sites.

One such castle is the Calnic Castle or Calnic Fortified Church located near Sibiu. Built by Count Chyl de Kelling during the 13th century, this castle has survived many sieges from the Ottoman empire, probably because of its high walls and defensive towers, including the Siegfried Tower. The firing windows of the five-storey Siegfried tower are noticeable even from afar, making it truly a historical landmark.

The most popular among the Romanian castles, though, is the Bran Castle in Brasov, which is also a national monument. Its beautiful turrets and majestic walls make it a must-see for anyone on a trip to Romania, although most of its fame comes from its nickname - Dracula’s Castle - and the mysterious legends that go with it. While the legend may never be proved, the rumor that Vlad Tepes used to live there is enough to lure flocks of tourists every year.

Another popular Romanian castle is the Corvinesti Castle, the former residence of Prince Iancu, one of Romania’s most famous rulers. Located in Hunedoara, it is considered as the country’s greatest, particularly because of its impressive drawbridge, vast halls and more than 50 chambers decorated with medieval art.

The Peles Castle in Sinaia is also one of the most enchanting Romanian castles, as well, as one of the most magnificent castles in all of Europe. It is also the first European castle to be electrically lit. Built in the 18th century, Peles Castle is an outstanding example of Neo-Renaissance architecture and consists of 170 lavishly furnished rooms, although only 35 are open to the public.

Although not technically one of the Romanian castles, the Palace of Culture in Iasi also deserves some attention on your trip to Romania. It is one of the largest buildings in Romania and is home to four different museums: The Museum of Art, The Museum of Science and Technology, The Museum of History and The Museum of Ethnography.

You can also visit the Fagaras Castle, although it has been reduced to a shadow of its former glory, as well as the Valea Viilor Fortress and Mogosoaia Palace. Don’t forget the other minor Romanian castles and fortresses, too. Although smaller and relatively unknown, they can still make your trip to Romania complete and truly memorable.

The Stockholm Airport, which long name is Stockholm Arlanda Airport, can be found at the municipality of Sigtuna in the city capital of Stockholm. It is quite near the towns of Marsta and Uppsala. It is the biggest airport in Sweden and ranks third against other Nordic countries.

The airport has four terminals. It is a complete amenity airport with easy transportation access to any point in town. You can get in and out of Stockholm Airport via rail, bus, taxi, or a rented car. The train called the Arlanda Express proposes the fastest way to get in and out of the airport.

As for the bus, it could take you to the Stockholm City Centre, the Central Station, and many locations to the northern part of the Stockholm County.
